I graduated from Birmingham University in 1979 (Phyllida Lloyd and I met at university). I knew I loved acting but wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I didn’t come from a particularly theatrical family, though jobs such as architecture and textile design were in my family.
I saw a job advert in The Stage (the theatre industry newspaper in the UK) for a job at the Swan Theatre in Worcester. I didn’t have a design background or qualification but I worked hard and learnt a lot during my time there. I did two seasons at The Swan, and then subsequent jobs have been the result of luck , building up a portfolio of work and taking advantage of opportunities that come up ever since.
